The briefing
ChatGPT Pro and Business subscriptions now include a monthly OpenAI API credit you can spend on building your own apps and agents. The credit lands in the API organization you link, and it is separate from your ChatGPT and signed-in Codex usage limits.
What you get
Pro 100 gets $100 a month, Pro 200 gets $200 a month, and Pro 500 gets $500 a month. Business workspaces are credited per paid seat, $20 for each Standard seat and $100 for each Premium seat, pooled and capped at $500 a month. Five Standard seats plus three Premium seats, for example, come to $400 a month. Business workspaces billed annually get the full year's grant upfront, capped at $6,000.
Your first grant is prorated for the time left in the current billing period, so it is usually smaller than the full amount; the full allowance starts with the next cycle. After that, credits arrive automatically at every renewal with no need to claim again. Unused credits don't roll over.
Plus, free trials, Enterprise, Edu and legacy Codex seats aren't eligible. Your paid subscription needs to be active for at least 7 days, and the benefit is rolling out by cohort and country, so check back in a few days if you don't see it in billing yet.
Where you can use it
The credits cover paid usage in the linked API organization, including Responses, Chat Completions, Agents, Realtime, image generation and built-in tools. Codex usage through API keys isn't covered.
The free credits are spent before any API credits you've bought. If everything runs out, API requests fail with a 429 error; nothing is charged to your ChatGPT subscription. You don't need to add a payment method to the API account to use the grant.
How to claim
- Use the same email for your ChatGPT account and your API account. For Pro, you need to own both the subscription and the receiving API organization. For Business, the person claiming must own both the workspace and the API organization.
- On Pro, open Settings and then Billing in ChatGPT. On Business, open the workspace billing settings or the Admin Console.
- Find the API credits benefit, pick the API organization that should receive the credits, and confirm. If you're new to the API, you can simply link the personal API organization under the same email.
- You can also go the other way: sign in to the API Platform, open Billing, and select your eligible subscription.
- Once linked, the credit and its expiry show up on the API Platform billing page.
Each subscription or workspace can link to only one API organization, and each organization can hold only one such link, so choose carefully. Downgrading to Plus, Go or Free removes the link at the end of the billing cycle, and a full refund removes the unused credits tied to that charge.
