The briefing
Nutrient, the company behind a set of PDF and document processing APIs, has launched AI Gateway. Its Free plan includes $5 of model usage every month, and the API is compatible with OpenAI's Responses and Chat Completions endpoints, so code written with the OpenAI SDK works once you swap in the base URL and API key.
What you can use
Models are exposed under Nutrient's own aliases rather than vendor model names. nutrient-s is for everyday prompts and low-cost generation, nutrient-m balances capability and cost, and nutrient-l handles more demanding analysis. There are also two decision models, nutrient-document-decision and nutrient-systemone, which answer yes/no, multiple-choice and scoring questions with probabilities.
Usage is billed by tokens against the $5 monthly allowance, and per-model rates are listed on the dashboard pricing page. Once the allowance is used up, requests return a 402 error unless you turn on pay-as-you-go, so nothing is charged automatically.
Test keys starting with pdf_test_ accept text only and don't consume your monthly allowance, which makes them handy while you build. Production calls use keys starting with pdf_live_.
