The briefing

OpenCode Zen has added Flint 40B Free (model ID flint-40b-free), the free version of Recursive's newly open-sourced coding model Flint. Anyone with an OpenCode Zen account can use it at no cost.

What you can use

Input, output, and cache reads on Flint 40B Free are all billed at $0. It's free for a limited time, with no end date or usage cap announced yet. Requests made during the free period may be used to improve the model and are kept for 30 days, so switch to a paid model for sensitive code.

If you'd rather use another provider, Flint is also free on OpenRouter and Kilo (model ID recursive/flint-v1.0:free), with input and output billed at $0 there too.

Specs

Flint is a mixture-of-experts model with about 40B total parameters and about 2.5B active, built by Recursive's autoresearch system Eureka Machine for coding agents. It takes text input only, supports about 262K tokens of context, reasons by default, and handles tool calling and structured JSON output. The weights are open under Apache 2.0 on Hugging Face.

How to use it

  1. Open OpenCode, sign in to Zen, and switch to Flint 40B Free with /models, or set the model to opencode/flint-40b-free in your config.
  2. For the API, use the endpoint https://opencode.ai/inference/openai/v1/chat/completions with model flint-40b-free.
  3. On OpenRouter, use model recursive/flint-v1.0:free.
