The briefing

Maritaca is a Brazilian AI lab, and on November 3 it released S5, the new generation of its Sabiá model family. Alongside the launch it added a limited-time free variant, S5-free, with no token charges. All you need is a platform account.

What you can use

S5 offers adjustable reasoning effort and a 1 million token context window. It is strongest in Portuguese and Brazilian topics, and it also handles coding and long documents. You can plug it into coding tools that accept a custom API, such as Aider or OpenClaw.

The free model is called S5-free. It accepts text input only and does not include the Batch API, Flex, or the built-in web search and code execution tools. The rate limit is the same for every account: 60 requests per minute and 256K tokens per minute each for input and output. It is a launch offer that can end at any time, after which you would switch to the paid S5 at R$0.50 per million input tokens and R$2.50 per million output tokens.

How to use it

  1. Sign up on the Maritaca platform and create an API key.
  2. Call it through the OpenAI-compatible API with base_url set to https://chat.maritaca.ai/api and the model name S5-free.

Pricing and rate limits are on the Maritaca pricing page and rate limits page, and the model is introduced in the S5 launch post.
