The briefing
OpenCode Zen and OpenRouter both just added an anonymous model called Crouton Alpha, and it is free for a limited time. It is now free in Kilo Code as well.
What you can use
Crouton Alpha is a lightweight reasoning model aimed at high-volume, repetitive work such as coding, agent sub-tasks, tool use and document analysis. It has about one million tokens of context, reads text, images, video and PDFs, supports tool calls and structured output, and offers six reasoning effort levels from minimal to max.
On OpenCode Zen, input, output and cached reads are all billed at $0, with up to roughly 270k output tokens per request. On OpenRouter it is also $0 for input and output, with up to roughly 940k output tokens and audio input on top.
It is a stealth preview model, so prompts and completions may be retained by the provider, though they are not used for training. Keep sensitive code out of it. No end date for the free period has been announced yet.
How to use it
- Open OpenCode, sign in to Zen, then pick Crouton Alpha Free with
/models, or setopencode/crouton-alpha-freein your config. - In Kilo Code, pick Crouton Alpha from the model list to use it for free.
- On OpenRouter, use the model name
